Feb 10, 2010 Wednesday - Day 8 – Snow day – on the road – Chicago – Providence
Awoke this AM to find out our 10AM flight to Providence via Baltimore was cancelled by the 2010 Blizzard in Washington DC. It was like the opposite of a school snow day because it cost $ at every turn, car rental, hotel stay, meals, more shopping.
Feb 11, 2010 – Thursday – Day 9 - New Orleans – Chicago – Providence
So there we are, waiting to board our Southwest flight to Chicago in all our Saints championship gear, just like everyone else. On every monitor in the terminal they are showing the Super Bowl replay – it’s 5 days later but no problem – we are all watching it. It’s time for our group to board, the gate lady is calling and then the TV blares, “now it’s time for the second half kickoff. “ Nobody would move. “Hey, maybe they will try an onside kick” says a voice. “Not in the Super Bowl, that would be crazy,” says another. “We are on a schedule, please board the plane” says the gate lady. But we all wait and watch the Saints recover the onside kick and we scream and yell like it’s the first time we have ever seen it. Miracles do happen – even on replays 4 days later!
We arrive in Chicago and walk through the terminal to get a quick bite. We are still in our Saints gear but nobody else is – we are in Chicago. As we walk, the most amazing thing happens, people start yelling “Who Dat”, giving us high fives, big smiles, joy that we thought was just in New Orleans folks is coming out of all these people in the airport. I realized in that moment that this Saints Super Bowl win was much bigger than football, this was about an underdog city coming back and being cheered on by an entire nation. We truly are America’s team, maybe the worlds, Miracles do happen! Who Dat!
